Security researcher Patrick Wardle explains the case to Wired. The iPhone from a friend of his had a strange bug: every time appeared the emoji of Taiwan’s flag, the apps were locked instantly. In the GIF below, the keyboard tries to suggest the symbol, but the app closes because of this. Location is set to “US”, but active languages include English and Mandarin.
What happened?
After some investigation, Wardle discovered that there was an error in the code that censures Taiwan emoji. It is activated when the location is set to “China”, or when one of the active languages is Mandarin. In extreme cases, iOS did not treat emoji as absent. Instead, it was interpreted as an invalid entry, which is worse: this made each app close or the entire iPhone get hang or stuck. The researcher informed the tech giant Apple about the failure in June; it has been fixed in iOS 11.4.1. The company says only that “a denial of service problem has been solved with improvements in memory usage”. Since 2017, iOS no longer displays the country flag if the location is set to “China”. The symbol does not appear on the emoji keypad, nor in the messages. As this censorship remains in force. Also read: How to Fix an iPhone Stuck On the Black Screen Without Losing Data
