According to the well-known media platform, India Today, this crucial information has been sent out by the Union Home Ministry just after receiving info from the intelligence agencies like the RAW and NTRO. Moreover, the report states that “As per reliable inputs, a number of Android/IOS apps developed by Chinese developers or having Chinese links are reportedly either spyware or other malicious ware. Use of these apps by our force personnel can be detrimental to data security having implications on the force and national security.” In fact, all the personnel have been advised to immediately uninstall all the Chinese spyware apps which include TrueCaller, Weibo, WeChat, UC News, UC Browser and Baidu Maps. Moreover, most of the applications which were blacklisted on the report are made by Chinese developers, except the Truecaller, as the Truecaller app is developed by a Swedish company. Hence, a Truecaller app spokesperson stated in a statement that “in response to certain reports, we would like to clarify that we are a Sweden based company. We are not sure why the app is on this list, but we’re investigating. Truecaller is not a malware, and all our features are permission based and are disabled by default.” However, this is not the first time when Chinese applications have come under the government’s inspection. As we have already seen that how UC Browser earlier came under the government’s surveillance for sending mobile data of Indian users to a server in China. So, what do you think about this?
